As a practicing anesthesiologist in a 20 member group and the scheduler since 1996 I can not begin to tell you the burden that has been lifted off my shoulders since our group outsourced our scheduling. I would routinely spend 25 hours a month outside an already busy practice scheduling, printing and distributing schedules, and talking with partners about last minute changes. I would spend countless hours trying to be "fair and equitable" in the scheduling in an environment where we have added hospital and surgi-center coverage plus have had the turnover of 10 anesthesiologists in an eight year period. Needless to say the "corporate memory" of who covered which holiday, how many 1st, 2nd, 3rd, OB, and cardiac calls, and how many primetime vacations--Christmas, Spring, Thanksgiving became muddled amongst our group.

I now spend about 2 hours a month going over the final revision of the schedule--Precision Information Services sends me an e-mail of the schedule and I send the revised and final schedule back. More importantly I have had more time to devote to my family and to concentrate on my particular interest in Transesophogeal Echocardiography.
From our groups standpoint we are now able to effectively communicate via an internet scheduling system anytime and anywhere. Group members can see historical data anytime/anywhere online regarding number of calls and who did coverage on which holiday, but they can also see future holiday assignments so that they can plan accordingly.
From a Medical Staff standpoint we can effectively communicate the latest requirements from agencies such as JCAH and CMS. We can also effectively disseminate information regarding credentialing and recredentialing issues.
Finally from a business standpoint. We are able to effectively track the amount of coverage we have provided to our various anesthetizing locations and have therefore been able to determine utilization. This helps in our business dealing with hospitals and surgi-centers with regards to low utilization and the need for income support.
